ORAL PRODUCTION TEST / A2

Level required

The level of the oral production test corresponds to level A2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages for oral production and interaction.

Candidates must be capable of introducing themselves and using simple language to talk about their family and other people, their living conditions, and their training or occupation. They must be capable of using simple language to describe and compare people, things and activities.

Content and procedure

The oral production test is in two parts:

  1. the examiner and the candidate talk about a given topic. The candidate chooses one of the two subjects proposed by the examiner. Possible subjects include: work, occupation, training, family, friends, hobbies, food and drink, the media, travel, holidays, languages;
  2. description of a visual medium. The candidate selects one of three photographs or images, and describes it.

The test lasts about ten minutes.

Assessment

The test takes place before two examiners. Each of the examiners assesses the candidate separately as soon as the test has been completed, according to the following criteria:

  • vocabulary;
  • use of basic grammatical structures;
  • fluidity;
  • clarity;
  • task fulfilment;
  • coherence;
  • ability to make oneself understood;
  • interaction.

LISTENING COMPREHENSION TEST / B1

Level required

The level of the listening comprehension test corresponds to level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages for listening comprehension:

The candidate can understand the main points of clear standard speech on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc. The candidate can understand the main points of many radio or TV programmes on current topics or matters of personal or professional interest when the delivery is relatively slow and clear.

Content and procedure

The listening comprehension test is in three parts:

  • a radio news item;
  • an everyday conversation between two people;
  • a discussion or presentation of a specific subject.

Each part comprises a sound recording and recorded questions. After each recording, the candidate answers the multiple-choice questions by indicating his/her answer on an answer sheet.

The test lasts about 25 minutes.

Assessment

Candidates’ answer sheets are marked by two markers using a marking grid.

PASSING CRITERIA:

A candidate passes the test if he/she obtains at least half the possible marks in the oral production test. An insufficient score can be compensated by the mark in the listening comprehension test.
